Overview

The GM Oil Life System (OLS) is a computer-based algorithm that assesses engine oil condition and optimizes oil chance intervals based on vehicle and environmental operating conditions.

Benefits

Utilizing the OLS and Simplified Maintenance Schedule provides the following benefits:

• it saves the vehicle owner time and money, while protecting his or her investment
• it simplifies decisions about the frequency of oil changes and other required maintenances
• it makes it easy for the vehicle owner to have his or her vehicle's oil changed and all routine maintenance performed during the same service visit
• it lowers the overall operating costs of the vehicle, because oil is changed only when it is necessary
• it reassures the vehicle owner that his or her engine is always running with good oil, which improves the long-term performance and reliability of the vehicle

The OLS and Simplified Maintenance Schedule are designed to take the mystery out of maintaining GM vehicles and provide benefits to the environment as well:

• reduces oil change frequency by using the GM Oil Life System
• In 1997, more than 640 million gallons of motor oil were sold, with about 345 million gallons purchased by "do-it-yourselfers." In the same time, "do-it-yourselfers" recycled only between 43 and 62 million gallons of used oil (according to the American Petroleum Institute).
• GM has built more than 20 million vehicles to date with its OLS. In the next five years, if the GM OLS is used as intended, almost 100 million gallons of oil could be saved.
• all GM Goodwrench dealers are equipped to properly dispose of waste oil.

GM estimates the following oil-change intervals using the OLS:

• primarily highway driving - 7,000 to 12,000 miles
• primarilty urban driving - 4,000 to 6,000 miles
• trailer towing - 5,000 to 7,000 miles
• short-trip service (less than two miles) - 3,000 to 4,000 miles
• typical mixed service - 4,000 to 7,000 miles
